An hour away from Washington D.C., where it seems few people ever agree on anything, there is a place that generates a consensus of opinion among the golfing faithful. If you are playing golf in Charles County, Maryland, one of your stops needs to be the Swan Point Yacht & Country Club, located on the banks of the Potomac River.

Swan Point Yacht & Country Club

Swan Point is consistently rated as one of the best courses in Maryland, and among the better places to play in the nation. Golf Digest magazine has named it one of the state’s top 10 courses, and Golf Styles proclaimed Swan Point to be one of the 100 must-play courses in the U.S.

Designed by award-winning architect Bob Cupp, the 6,800-yard layout at Swan Point has distinct characteristics on every hole. The course is carved into the marsh land along the Potomac (water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes), which makes for both a beautiful setting and a challenging golf experience. It also gives Swan Point the same coastal feel that is found at many famous Carolina courses such as Hilton Head.

In addition to being located in a tranquil part of southern Maryland, the course layout contributes to a sense of solitude at Swan Point. There are only two holes on the entire course that run parallel to each other, meaning you can play nearly an entire round without seeing any golfers other than those in your group.

White Plains Golf Course

A deft touch is needed for those who decide to play the White Plains Golf Course near St. Charles. Trees abound throughout the 6,248-yard course, which keeps the fairways tight and often prevents a direct path to the green. In addition, every fairway has a dogleg curve to the left or right, meaning the greens are not visible from the tee box. This municipal course opened in 1974 and remains popular among area residents.

Potomac Ridge Golf Links

In nearby Waldorf, the Potomac Ridge Golf Links offers 27 holes of varying degrees of difficulty. The front nine of the main 6,600-yard, 18-hole course is relatively flat while the back is slightly hilly. Water comes into play on nearly half the holes and there are 35 sand traps. Perhaps the most challenging hole is No. 16, a 530-yard dogleg with water on the left, trees on the right and a well-protected green. You can learn how to play that hole and others through the Potomac Ridge Nike Golf Learning Center.

Hawthorne Country Club

The private Hawthorne Country Club in La Plata has a 6,000-yard course that opened in 1960. The hilly terrain is difficult to walk, but the course is well maintained and can be enjoyed by both novice and veteran players.
