Holland, MI Retirees Benefit With Housing Selection, High-Ranked Hospital
Assisted living communities thrive in Western Michigan.
The word is out, and Holland Hospital keeps earning major industry awards. In March 2008, Thompson, formerly Solucient, named Holland Hospital one of the country’s top 100 hospitals.
The independent organization measures and ranks the performance of 3,000 U.S. hospitals each year, and Holland made the prestigious list three years in a row. The facility hit another top 100 list, Total Benchmark Solutions’ Best Acute Care Hospitals, in 2005 and 2006. Using 18 different measures, the study looked at heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia care. Its diverse specialties include a sleep disorder clinic and center for women’s midlife services. With 205 beds and busy outpatient services, Holland Hospital posts some big numbers. A typical year will include nearly 2,000 births, 9,000 surgeries and 40,000 emergency room and home health visits. Each.
In the region, Holland Hospital is one of the health care anchors. Residents to the north, nearer Grand Haven, also have North Ottawa Community Hospital and its many affiliates and partnerships. The 81-bed hospital, which got its start in 1919, is only the beginning of the North Ottawa Community Health System, which also includes a hospice, in-home nursing care and equipment, and urgent care center. It teamed up with Horizon Medical, a physicians’ group, for the Harbor Dunes Health Center on the hospital campus. The system partnered with Agility Health Inc. for physical therapy services in 2006. And the North Ottawa system is building a facility on 13 acres in Spring Lake with hospice, rehabilitative and skilled nursing care. Older residents have multiple options in this region. Nursing homes in Allegan and Ottawa counties alone have 1,500 beds.
Assisted living communities thrive in Western Michigan. LifeHOUSE Retirement Properties operates Lakeside Vista in Holland, with both independent apartments and assisted living. Waverly Meadows is a community for residents ages 62 and up, with luxury apartments of one or two bedrooms in Holland. With so many options for retirees, it’s no wonder Money magazine put Holland fourth on its 2006 list of the nation's best places to retire.
