Big Names and Awards
The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center were ranked among America's best by U.S. News & World Report because of the number of specialties they provide, beating out the almost 5,000 hospitals analyzed.
The Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Allina's Phillips Eye Institute provide care to Minneapolis residents as well. Also, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is roughly an hour away.
Minneapolis’ childrens' hospitals are recognized for their quality of care as well. University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital and Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota have also been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for the number of specialties they provide to patients, ranking highest in nephrology.
Minneapolis has been a center for health care for years. Cardiac surgery was developed at the university's Variety Club Hospital, where, by 1957, more than 200 patients survived open-heart operations, many of them children.
