Minneapolis, MN: Public and Private Schools Overview

Public Schools

Minneapolis Public Schools enroll more than 36,000 students in public primary and secondary schools. The district administers about 100 public schools including elementary, middle and high schools, as well as special education, alternative and charter schools.

Almost 90 percent of high school students in the city graduate, and the majority of students also go on to college.

Minneapolis schools have a very diverse student population. The city’s students speak 90 different languages at home, and most school communications are printed in English, Hmong, Spanish and Somali.

Some students attend public schools in other school districts chosen by their families under Minnesota's open enrollment statute.

Private Schools

There are more than 70 private schools in Minneapolis. About half of the private schools are Roman Catholic institutions, and others are Christian denominations, Jewish and nonsectarian. The enrollment at these schools is smaller; none have more than 1,400 students.
