Hear that noise? It’s the boom occurring in Scott County, located just southwest of Minneapolis on the banks of the Minnesota River. Its county seat is Shakopee, a city where several top companies are providing the region with an increasingly diverse economy. Here are some major employers:

Canterbury Park

Just off U.S. Highway 169 in Shakopee is Canterbury Park, a horse racetrack and card casino that is one of the top entertainment destinations in Minnesota. Canterbury Park offers live thoroughbred racing as well as 24/7 card games like Texas hold’em, blackjack and more.

Valleyfair

More than 70 full-timers and 1,600 seasonal employees work at Valleyfair, a family amusement park with 75 rides and a Soak City water park. Billed as the largest amusement park in the upper Midwest, Valleyfair celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016.

Seagate Technology

Specializing in data storage solutions is Seagate Technology, headquartered in Shakopee with more than 1,000 employees who assist clients from around the world. The company continues to grow because the demand for storage technology continues to increase.

Mystic Lake Casino Hotel

The only casino hotel in the Twin Cities area is Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, established in 1992 by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. The facility has slot machines and table games and features top restaurants, comfortable guest rooms and shopping options.

St. Francis Regional Medical Center

With 85 private rooms, St. Francis Regional Medical Center is ranked among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for care and quality. The campus includes a cancer center, dialysis building, dentistry services, rehabilitation center and several specialized clinics.

CommScope

The hundreds of employees at CommScope are involved with designing and building wired and wireless components for the aerospace, automotive, defense and medical industries. The company’s technology solutions can be found in large buildings, data centers, airports, tunnels and more.

Shutterfly

More than 1,000 employees work at Shutterfly, whose Shakopee facility manages an online photo-sharing and storage site to preserve the fond memories of customers. Shutterfly’s portfolio includes brands like BorrowLenses, Groovebook, MyPublisher, Tiny Prints and Wedding Paper Divas.

Cargill’s

With a large grain-processing plant in Savage, Cargill’s provides agricultural products to customers throughout the United States and world. The company’s operations include processing grain for food and beverages used by humans, and Cargill’s also makes several animal feeds.

ConAgra Foods

Based in New Prague, ConAgra Foods makes food items that are branded with names like Healthy Choice, Hunt’s, Marie Callender’s and Orville Redenbacher’s. The company also supplies frozen potato and sweet potato products to commercial and foodservice customers.

Rahr Malting Co.

Producing malt and barley for name-brand brewing industry customers is the mission at Rahr Malting. The company is currently undergoing a major expansion with a new warehouse, distribution center, malt house and technical center all set to open in 2017.
