Region enjoys strength in several sectors.

By Kevin Litwin on September 29, 2016

Scott County has developed a diverse economy that is strong in agriculture, construction, manufacturing, technology and other sectors. Here is some background:

Agriculture

It’s in its nature for Scott County to be prosperous in agriculture, with many companies experiencing sustained growth. One example is ConAgra Foods, which operates a major flour mill in New Prague that makes products branded with names like Marie Callender’s and Healthy Choice. In Shakopee, Bayer Crop Science opened a $12 million facility in 2015 that designs and makes customized equipment for large seed-harvesting companies such as DuPont Pioneer and Monsanto.

Construction

Whether you’re considering rural or city living, Scott County has several top-level companies that meet the construction needs of any customer. CalAtlantic Homes (formerly Ryland Homes) is developing the Providence subdivision in Savage with home prices in the upper $300,000s to lower $400,000s, and Pulte Homes is constructing the upscale Creek Hill Estates South development in Savage. In Prior Lake, D.R. Horton is building the Hickory Shores and Hickory Shores South neighborhoods, and also in Prior Lake is Dominium, which is erecting a senior citizens apartment building with affordable monthly rents ranging from $930-$1,130. For commercial customers, S.M. Hentges & Sons tackles everything from small curb and gutter projects to construction of massive bridges.

Manufacturing

The manufacturing sector continues to gain strength in Scott County, with success stories such as Scott Equipment Company in New Prague, which manufactures customized equipment for the agricultural and industrial markets. Fabcon in Savage designs and installs lightweight and strong precast concrete wall panels, and RES Specialty Pyrotechnics in Belle Plaine makes large fireworks displays synchronized for professional music shows.

Inventor Mike Lindell runs his My Pillow manufacturing company in Shakopee with a workforce of more than 1,000 people, and Rollx Vans in Savage sells new and used vans equipped with wheelchairs for customers that have mobility issues. At the Toro Company in Shakopee, employees produce a variety of turf, snow and ground-engaging equipment.

Technology

The technology field is thriving in Scott County, led by companies such as Seagate, based in Shakopee, which has become a leader in data storage solutions. Chief Manufacturing in Savage designs mounting and rack solutions that support audio visual products such as wall-mounted flat-screen TVs. Milestone AV Technologies in Shakopee, the parent company of Chief, in 2016 opened a 240,000-square-foot warehousing facility that can expand to 300,000 square feet.
