With more than 40 restaurants, downtown St. Cloud is a diner’s playground. Both high-end fine dining and regional chains are represented, yet a good number of downtown’s eateries are locally owned and just as popular.
Mi Famiglia Restaurant, Bar & Lounge is a new entry that is getting raves for its authentic Italian food. The main restaurant offers an upscale menu, while its Italian Market serves less formal fare and sells all sorts of imported Italian meats, cheese and other products. The family-owned business also encompasses 912 Catering, providing meals for both large and small occasions, and the trio are located across from the Paramount Theatre in The Regency.
A local landmark, D.B Searle’s is housed in an 1861 building with a storied history as a public house, funeral home, sleeping parlor, tailor, bank, rehearsal hall and Masonic Temple. Today, it serves up juicy steak, fresh seafood and other classics on its top two floors.
Mississippi Bean & Tea Company, a popular coffee shop, perks up St. Germain Street in the thriving arts district. The same strip is also home to Mexican Village, a fun spot where the margaritas are a magnet, making for a very content happy hour.
Granite City Days, an annual festival in late June, now holds the Taste of St. Cloud at Lake George. And if you come early enough, you can enjoy the Fly-In Pancake Breakfast, held that morning.
Central Minnesota is still farming country, and fresh, local ingredients are available at many farm stands. St. Cloud hosts a farmers’ market every Saturday morning in the Bremer Bank Parking Lot on 12th Avenue and Division Street from May through October. It then moves to nearby Sartell on Wednesday afternoons at the Abbott Northwestern Care Center on Highway 15.
