Asheville-Based Mission Health Helps People Work Where They Want

Mission Health has six hospitals, many ambulatory clinics

By Kevin Litwin on August 21, 2016

Mission Health operates six hospitals – and so much more.

Also under the Mission umbrella are numerous outpatient clinics, a surgery center, post-acute care provider CarePartners, long-term acute care provider Asheville Specialty Hospital, and the region’s only dedicated Level II trauma center. Its workforce includes physicians, advanced practitioners, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, care managers, pharmacists, social workers, behavioral health specialists, home care professionals, paramedics – and on and on.

“Health care has evolved a lot in the last 20 years, with many hospitals adding off-site ambulatory settings that are great places for medical professionals to grow with more job opportunities,” says David Franklin, MD, President of Mission Medical Associates, the employed physicians’ network within Mission Health. “More and more health care is done in outpatient settings.”

Dr. Franklin reviews a Quality Board where teams monitor their progress toward specific goals.

A Hundred Practices in 18 Counties

Franklin says that instead of the old-school big hospital with all clinics under one roof, today’s model involves offering care throughout the region so patients do not have to travel hours to a major hospital for many services.

“Mission’s regional hospitals are obviously vital, but we also feature more than 100 practices for the 18 western North Carolina counties we serve,”
he says. “And western North Carolina features a great quality of life. A top-quality physician recently contacted me from Texas and told me his kids are grown and he enjoys backpacking, and he asked to join our Mission staff in Asheville. He will start with us in the summer of 2017.”

Jeff D’Agostino, chief administrative officer for Mission Medical Associates, adds that ambulatory medical positions specifically for doctors can be in primary care, general surgery, orthopedics, emergency work, pediatrics, OB-GYN and more.

“Besides working for MMA, I’m also an outdoor writer, wildlife artist and photographer, and I like hunting and fishing,” D’Agostino says. “It’s true – western North Carolina is a great place to be.”
