With the Atlantic Ocean gracing its entire eastern border, North Carolina is beautiful, with numerous outdoor recreation attractions that help make the Tar Heel State a major tourism destination. A diverse economy includes strong education, energy, finance, healthcare and biotechnology industries, and the following are the 10 largest employers in the state:

1. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Also known as UNC, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789 and offers 70 academic programs through its 15 colleges. The sports teams are called the Tar Heels, which is also the nickname of North Carolina itself.

2. Merrill Lynch & Co.

A division of Bank of America, Merrill Lynch has more than 10,000 employees in Charlotte who manage wealth investments for primarily corporate customers. The company handles in excess of $2.2 trillion in client assets.

3. Sylvan Learning Center-Fayetteville

In Fayetteville, more than 7,000 people work for Sylvan Learning to provide personalized instruction in reading, writing, math and study skills for students in elementary and high schools. The company also offers test preparation for college entrance and state exams.

4. WakeMed Health and Hospitals

WakeMed has multiple medical facilities throughout metropolitan Raleigh and a total of 870 hospital beds. Its services include cardiology, orthopedics, high-risk pregnancy, children’s care and physical rehabilitation.

5. Comprehensive Cancer Center

In Winston-Salem is the Comprehensive Cancer Center, designed for adult and child patients who have cancer that has failed standard treatment. The center is known for its advanced research and success in clinical trials.

6. Wake Forest Baptist Health

Wake Forest Baptist Health is the parent company of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, which features almost 200 buildings spread over 425 acres. The Winston-Salem hospital has earned high marks in areas such as cancer, gastroenterology, neurosurgery and urology.

7. Wells Fargo Bank

With a major corporate hub in Charlotte, Wells Fargo Bank is the country’s second largest bank in deposits, debit cards and home mortgage servicing. More than 6,000 employees work in Charlotte, and Wells Fargo is ranked among the most respected companies in the world.

8. Duke Children’s Hospital

Offering diagnostic, surgical and emergency care, Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham treats almost every affliction that can potentially affect a young person’s health. Parents are welcome to stay with their child from admission to recovery.

9. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital

A 535-bed medical center in Greensboro, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital opened in 1953 and today serves about 65,000 patients a year. Its emergency department is recognized as a Level II trauma center.

10. Charter Communications

Cable telecommunications giant Charter Communications purchased Time Warner Cable in 2016, and Charter has about 5,000 employees who work from the company’s Charlotte location. Charter operates its Internet, phone and cable service in more than 25 states.
