There's plenty of outdoor fun to be enjoyed in Elizabeth City. With soccer, biking, hiking and more available, residents and visitors have plenty of options when it comes to recreation.

Youth Soccer and River Road Soccer Complex

Youth soccer in Elizabeth City was revamped with the addition of the River Road Soccer Complex in spring 2010. The complex, which features five lighted fields, is conveniently located across from River Road Middle School. Organized soccer had previously been played at Northeastern Park, but the new facility will continue to enrich the community by bringing players and families together at a central location.

Area Parks

Area parks provide plenty of outdoor activities. Visitors can explore nature at the Dismal Swamp Park. The park sits on the bank of the historic Dismal Swamp Canal and offers hiking, paddling, biking, birding and photography opportunities. As part of the NC Birding Trail, the park is host to over 200 species of birds as well as numerous other animals, reptiles and plants. Interactive exhibits in the Visitor Center and Range based programs provide an element of educational value, as well.

Fun Junktion is a family-friendly park perfect for field trips or family gatherings. A skate park, children’s playground, nature trail and picnic area are all part of this 133-acre expanse.

Edenton Steamers Summer Baseball League

The Edenton Steamers are part of the collegiate summer Coastal Plain League and host college players from across the nation. From late May through early August, the Steamers play a 56-game schedule, including 28 home dates. The players have even won two league championships. The action takes place at 7:00 p.m. on the historical Hicks Field, which was expanded in 1997 prior to the Steamers joining the CPL. Baseball America magazine has rated Hicks Field as the second-best collegiate baseball venue in the United States.

Dixieland Speedway

From April through September, one of the most popular attractions to the Elizabeth City area is the Dixieland Speedway. With three racetracks for stockcar, go-cart and motorcycle racing, the speedway is always abuzz with excitement during racing season. Located just 12 miles north of Elizabeth City and only 25 miles from Virginia Beach, racing fans from all over love to enjoy a night at the track every summer.

Not only does the Speedway provide an action-packed adventure for the whole family, it doesn’t come at a major cost. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 11, and free for children under age 5.
