Just outside of Gastonia, NC, Crowders Mountain State Park is truly one of nature’s gifts. The 5126-acre site includes the peaks of Crowder's Mountain and The Pinnacle, with cliffs that are a popular destination for rock climbers. High atop Crowders Mountain, the second highest point in Gaston County, views stretch for more than 25 miles. Crowders Mountain, at an elevation of 1,625 feet, is a registered natural heritage area that features sheer vertical cliffs ranging from 100 to 150 feet in height. Kings Pinnacle has a gentler profile and reaches an elevation of 1,705 feet. The peaks are remnants of an ancient mountain range, part of the Appalachian chain that formed in the region 450 to 500 million years ago. Whether you choose to spend a lazy afternoon fishing in the nine-acre wooded lake or hiking the rocky trails, there is never a dull moment for the athletic here. Activities include camping, picnicking, rock-climbing and plenty more. Miles of hiking trails are lined with wildflowers and mountain laurel as they guide visitors along the ridges and to the summits of Crowders Mountain and Kings Pinnacle. Other trails are easy promenades through pastoral surroundings. Circle the lake on a gravel path or view aquatic plants and animals along a narrow creek. Crowders Mountain State Park is located in Gaston County, 25 miles west of Charlotte and six miles southwest of Gastonia.
