Jacksonville’s a military town, and the employment opportunities lean heavily towards providing services to the military community. The base is by far the top provider of jobs, with service members, government employees and contract workers all providing an economic boost to the area. There is also an array of service industry jobs, especially in hospitality, with North Carolina’s beautiful beaches drawing visitors from the entire East Coast and beyond.
Department of Defense
Jacksonville is home to Camp Lejeune, which is the largest Marine Corps base on the East Coast. With more than 43,000 service members assigned to Lejeune and its attached air station, New River, the Department of Defense is the largest employer in the region. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune provides an economic impact of $4 million dollars to the surrounding community annually.
Onslow County Board Of Education
Onslow County is home to 26,000 school age children, and the task of providing these kids with a quality education falls on the roughly 1,200 educators and administrators employed by the Onslow County Board Of Education. The district consists of 37 educational facilities which is made up of 20 elementary schools, eight middle schools, seven high schools, one early childhood development center, and one alternative learning program in and around the Jacksonville community.
Marine Corps Community Services
Along with the active duty service members stationed at Camp Lejeune are an additional 6,500 civilian government employees who hold lots of different jobs on the base, from food service to engineers. Civilian jobs on base can be found at USAJOBS and the MCCS website.
County of Onslow and the City Of Jacksonville
Onslow County and the city of Jacksonville provide numerous services for the residents of Jacksonville. From parks and recreation to the jail to road crews, the county government employs a wide range of workers.
Onslow Memorial Hospital
Onslow Memorial Hospital is a 162-bed facility, and is the only hospital in the City of Jacksonville and Onslow County. Their staff of more than 100 doctors is credentialed in 25 specialty areas; and the hospital has a state of the art Imaging Center, Heartburn Center, Cardiac Cath Lab, Neurodiagnostic Lab, MRI and CT Scanner equipment.
Convergys Customer Management Group employs more than 130,000 worldwide with more than 500 at their Jacksonville call center. They provide customer service solutions for clients in a wide range of industries, from healthcare to retail. Most of their Jacksonville employees are involved in call center issue resolution for a variety of companies.
Coastal Carolina Community College
Coastal Carolina Community College is a technical college that provides instruction on an array of topics. Students can earn an associates degree or certificates in the trades. According to the university, forty to fifty percent of their students are active duty military and their families. The university also offers courses at Camp Lejeune and online courses to military personnel and families.
One of the larger manufacturers in the Jacksonville area is Stanadyne, which makes auto parts. Their goal is to provide innovative solutions to the world’s most challenging problems in diesel and gasoline fuel systems. The company designs and manufactures fuel injector components at its Jacksonville facility.
The large military base in Jacksonville gives local small businesses the opportunity to compete for government contracts, and Coastal Enterprises has capitalized on this, winning contracts for mowing and food services on the bases. They also run an employment program for people with disabilities, providing them with meaningful employment in manufacturing of military equipment.
Marine Federal Credit Union
Marine Federal provides banking services to the members of the military and the local community. The credit union has four branch locations on base and another nine in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Their corporate headquarters is also located in Jacksonville and they provide a wide variety of financial services to their community.
