Shoppers who visit the Lenoir County Farmers Market will find everything from asparagus to zucchini, and, since it's open all year long, it's good to the last crop.
The market is actually unlike most farmers markets for a couple of reasons. The Lenoir County site on North Herritage Street is open five days a week, from Tuesday through Saturday. It also features three large round bays for selling, plus restrooms, power outlets and running water.
“Most markets aren’t lucky enough to have all of those amenities, so the county was quite wise when they built this operation several years ago,” says Tammy Kelly, director of the Lenoir County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, which manages the market. “The county owns and maintains the overall facility, while the city of Kinston maintains the grounds around it. It’s a very nice complex for the participating farmers and the public.”
In fact, Kelly says it has built up such a good reputation that many area restaurants purchase their fresh fruits and vegetables from the farmers, many of which are organic.
“Farmers market produce is renowned for being mostly locally grown and very fresh, and that certainly is the case in Lenoir County,” Kelly says. “The farmers usually pick the produce at the peak of flavor, and it doesn’t have to travel as far to get to a customer’s table.”
And that’s good news for consumers, not to mention affordable.
“Prices are always reasonable at the Lenoir County Farmers Market, and the choices are plentiful,” she adds. “I know people who do almost all of their weekly shopping at this market. It’s a smart and healthy thing to do.”
