Wilkes County offers its residents high-quality health care through the community-owned Wilkes Regional Medical Center. The fully accredited, 130-bed hospital offers a range of physician services, from cardiology to internal medicine to pediatrics.

The health industry is in good shape in Wilkes County, thanks in large part to its award-winning hospital, several clinics and a community push toward better eating and exercise habits.

Wilkes Regional Medical Center

Since 1952, the town of North Wilkesboro has owned Wilkes Regional Medical Center. A recent expansion to the 130-bed hospital resulted in a larger emergency room that went from 9,500 to 19,000 square feet, and a family-focused New Beginnings Birthing Center where newborns may share rooms with their families 24 hours a day. Physician specialties at WRMC include cardiology, family practice, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics, ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry, general surgery and urology.

WRMC Heart Center

Wilkes Regional Medical Center has entered into a partnership with Wake Forest Baptist Health and opened a new Heart Center on the WRMC campus. Staffing the facility are two board-certified cardiologists who oversee care and diagnostic testing for patients with heart-related diseases and disorders. Services include stress testing, echocardiograms and EKGs, with most patients referred to the Heart Center by their family physicians.

West Park Medical Plaza

A subsidiary of Wilkes Regional Medical Center, West Park Medical Plaza, headquartered in a former shopping center, features a variety of health-care services. WRMC’s lauded home care and hospice program that employs more than 200 nurses and health professionals is housed in the plaza, and so is Valley Radiology Associates, which offers a wide range of diagnostics. Also on-site is WRMC’s Wound Healing Center, which opened at West Park in 2013.

Hugh Chatham Family Medicine

Serving patients in Wilkes County as well as northwestern North Carolina and southwestern Virginia is Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin, which has also opened four Hugh Chatham Family Medicine clinics to provide further convenient care to residents. The clinics in Boomer, Elkin, Hays and Jonesville offer services that include family medicine, minor procedures, physicals and same-day sick visits.

Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less

A community-wide initiative called Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less schedules periodic 15-week programs that are organized by Wilkes County Cooperative Extension. Also backing the local “get healthy” effort is Wilkes County 4H, Wilkes Express YMCA and the Wilkes County Health Department.
