The energetic president and CEO of the Winston-Salem Symphony — celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2022 — says the Bell, Davis & Pitt law firm’s continuing role as a season presenting sponsor for the orchestra exemplifies the very definition of commitment to community — one of shared interests, shared goals and the feeling of fellowship with others.

“The firm’s support of the symphony’s Piedmont Learning Academy for Youth, or P.L.A.Y. music program, helps provide free instrumental instruction, literacy enhancement, self-esteem building, appreciation of diverse cultures and much more for underserved students,” Merritt explains.
When primary school-aged children start the program, they are given a sturdy cardboard violin. Upon completion, the pint-sized players are presented a child’s violin, which is often followed by ear-to-ear smiles.
One mother, whose nonverbal child participated in P.L.A.Y., says, “My son literally found his voice through his violin.”
Bell, Davis & Pitt’s role in the annual Mistletoe Run (half marathon, 5K and fun run) — the Y’s largest fundraiser and a tradition in Winston-Salem for more than four decades — helps provide scholarships and youth programming for before- and after-school care, swim lessons, youth sports, summer camps and more.
The law firm’s involvement as a presenting sponsor “is important because it helps elevate our visibility in the community,” says Richard V. Daniels Sr., executive director of the William G. White Jr. Family YMCA.
“They provide volunteers to assist with our packet pickup on Friday, host our gear check area for runners on race morning, and have one of our top participating teams.”
