The tiniest things can mean big opportunities.
That’s why the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton and the Minnesota State Community and Technical College in nearby Moorhead started offering a collaborative nanoscience technician associate in applied science degree.
Fargo is home to the Skills & Technology Training Center, a division of NDSCS, where nanotech students take industry-specific courses during their second year. Program leaders say more than 2 million workers, many of them technicians, will be needed to support a nanoscience technology industry that is expected to top $1 trillion by 2010.
Educational opportunities of all shapes distinguish Fargo.
North Dakota State University opened its doors in 1890 with an agricultural focus, and though it is a full-service public university, NDSU still has strong roots to the land. It operates several agricultural research centers across North Dakota on land of more than 22,000 acres.
Fargo is home to a campus of the University of Mary, the state’s only private Catholic University. It’s got more than 44 undergraduate majors, including theology, offers master’s programs in nursing, management, education, business administration, counseling, occupational therapy, and project management. Total enrollment is about 2,900.
Rasmussen College, which got its start in 1900 by a businessman in St. Paul, Minn., who wanted a place to educate workers for an expanding business environment, has a Fargo campus. Just across the state line in Moorhead are Concordia College and Minnesota State University.
Younger learners have vast opportunities in Fargo, too. The district offers a summer performing arts school; high school students have 28 curriculum areas, including aerospace science.
Fargo schools have won distinction as one of the Best 100 Communities for Music Education; received the What Parents Want award based on a survey of nearly 1 million parents by SchoolMatch, a relocation assistance firm; and ranked in the top 17 percent of secondary schools in the United States by Expansion Management magazine.
