In 1953, Jesse Anthony (J.A.) Baldwin moved his filter manufacturing operation to Kearney, Nebraska, setting up shop with a total of nine employees.

Nearly 70 years later, as part of the Parker Hannifin Corporation, Baldwin’s old business has expanded to approximately 1,200 employees operating out of 1 million square feet of manufacturing, research and distribution space. And, in the process, the company has infiltrated the Kearney community.

“We still have the small, family feel of the original Baldwin culture, but now with the backing of the big Parker Hannifin Company that supports us and gives us whatever we need,” general manager Steve Zimmerman says.

That’s because Parker Hannifin is a Fortune 250 global leader in motion and control technologies, with 336 manufacturing locations across 50 countries. The Kearney operation focuses on the creation of a variety of vehicle filters, including air, fuel, coolant and hydraulic.

With 33 production areas, the Kearney manufacturing facility churns out approximately 800,000 components and 110,000 filters daily. The distribution center ships an average of $2 million worth of product daily.

But in addition to being one of the biggest businesses in Kearney, Parker/Baldwin truly is part of the local community. The company is a member of the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce; regularly sponsors food, school supply and Christmas toy drives; is a United Way campaign sponsor; and partners with the local education systems on engineering and supply chain programs.

Since 2013, Parker/Baldwin has operated an on-site Wellness Center that helps provide quality health care to the employees and their family members. The center can assist with medications and prescriptions, offer general health screenings such as blood pressure checks, and refer individuals to a specialist if needed. The center also provides expert advice on such issues as disease management, weight loss and stress management by identifying health risks and then working to mitigate those risks.

It is all part of the way that Parker/ Baldwin supports the Kearney community. After all, this has been home to these manufacturing efforts since the days when J.A. first arrived in town. Back then, annual sales were less than $300,000. Now, the company generates $400 million in aftermarket sales, thanks in large part to a dedicated local workforce.

“It’s the kind of community where you drive down the street and people wave at you. It’s just a great place to live.”

Steve Zimmerman, general manager, Parker Hannifin

“We have excellent, hard-working folks in this area who do things the right way,” Zimmerman says. “I’ve been across the United States, and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a work ethic like we have here. And it’s the kind of community where you drive down the street and people wave at you. It’s just a great place to live and do business, and as a company, we’re engrained in this community.”
