Business and industry exemplify diversity in the Fulton and Montgomery counties region.
Gloves and Leather
In the former glove-making capital of the world, Daniel Storto continues the tradition of designing and hand-stitching gloves from his Daniel Storto Gloves shop in downtown Gloversville. Passersby can observe him as he creates his gloves using tools that date to the early 1800s.
Leathermaking also shares in the economic tradition here, as there were more than 300 leather companies in Johnstown and Gloversville in the late 1800s and early 1900s. About a dozen leather companies operate here today, notably Townsend Leather, which makes upholstery leather for aircraft, yachts and automobiles, and Carville National Leather Corp., which produces leathers for footwear and upholstery and leather tiles for floor and wall coverings.
Baby Food, Cheese and Yogurt
People also know the Fulton-Montgomery Region for its food producers. Baby food company Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp., headquartered in Amsterdam, dates to 1931. The family-owned company, the second-leading baby food producer in the U.S., is a subsidiary of Hero AG of Lenzburg, Switzerland.
Other top food producers in the region include Euphrates Inc. and FAGE, both located in the Johnstown Industrial Park.
