Philadephia International Airport, state universities top the list

Known officially as a commonwealth, the state of Pennsylvania was founded in 1681 and is graced with the Appalachian Mountains traversing through its middle. The Keystone State annually ranks among the Top 10 economies in America, with strength in sectors such as agriculture, finance, insurance, technology, education and healthcare. Here is some background on its nine major employers:

1. Philadelphia International Airport

With an annual economic impact of around $15 billion, Philadelphia International Airport is a key national hub for American Airlines as well as a regional cargo hub for UPS. The airport has seven terminals and more than 10,000 employees.

2. Geisinger Health System

Serving more than 3 million residents in Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey is Geisinger Health System, a physician-led organization in Lock Haven that provides care for patients at 12 regional hospital campuses.

3. University of Pittsburgh

Often referred to simply as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh was founded in 1787 and feature 17 schools and colleges on its urban Pittsburgh, PA campus. More than 28,000 students attend classes, and the university has multiple historic buildings.

4. Pennsylvania State University

Commonly known as “Penn State,” Pennsylvania State University is in University Park, PA and welcomes an enrollment that exceeds 46,000 students annually. PSU offers more than 160 majors and has about 10,000 employees.

5. Sylvan Learning Center-Manheim

In Manheim, PA, about 5,000 people work for Sylvan Learning to provide personalized instruction in reading, writing, math and study skills for students in elementary, middle and high schools. The company also offers test preparation for college entrance and state exams.

6. Sylvan Learning Center-Somerset

Providing personalized learning programs to students in primary and secondary education is the mission at Sylvan Learning Center in Somerset, PA, which employs about 4,000 people. The company specializes in personalized instruction in reading, writing, math and college entrance exams.

7. Highmark Inc.

More than 7,000 employees in Pittsburgh work for Highmark Inc., a company that makes quality health care available through its businesses in health insurance, dental insurance and vision care.

8. Lehigh Valley Health Network

Serving residents of northeast Pennsylvania is Lehigh Valley Health Network, based in Allentown, PA and the management company for three full-service hospitals, a children’s hospital, and community clinics in more than a dozen small communities.

9. Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park

In Elkins Park, PA is Einstein Medical Center, a hospital that features a 24-hour emergency department and several medical services. They include radiology, neurology, a mental health clinic, ophthalmology and numerous surgical procedures.
