Retirement communities used to be all about a relaxed lifestyle. Very‚ very relaxed. But with a fitness room‚ cybercafe and salon among its amenities‚ Grace Park Seniors Living Well residents aren’t sitting around‚ except when it’s time for a freshly prepared meal.

The complex‚ which opened in December 2005‚ sits on five acres in Stroudsburg. A former nursing home‚ the complex had a main building as well as five cottages on the site‚ which had been in operation since the late 1950s.

A series of financial reverses had shuttered the facility‚ which was purchased by George and Tammy Loudon and became Grace Park. The Loudons‚ who have a son with Down syndrome‚ had been looking at opening some kind of assisted living facility‚ something that would be of benefit to their son over time‚ says George Loudon. The vacant nursing home offered them a chance to create an entire residential complex‚ something that would offer several levels of care for active seniors and others.

The first phase is 22 assisted-living studio apartments that were created from a gutted section of the main building‚ as well as the amenity areas‚ which include a library with fireplace‚ media room‚ two living rooms‚ fitness room‚ wellness room‚ salon‚ laundry‚ cybercafe‚ three-season enclosed porch and outdoor patio area. Next up will be a new‚ two-story‚ 38-apartment assisted living building‚ set to open later in 2006. After that will be a 19-unit garden apartment building‚ which will be composed of independent living homes with optional services such as nurse-call capability‚ laundry and a food program from the main building. And down the line‚ the five cottages on the property will be renovated and also serve as residential homes.

The goal for Grace Park‚ Loudon says‚ is to offer active seniors a variety of options to meet both their medical and social needs. “We wanted to have a senior community with a blend of independent and assisted living on the same site‚” he says. “We have a social model‚ not a medical model … We have a lot of programs at our site‚ and programs that integrate them into the community.”
