Nearly 1‚100 high school students from across the region are getting hands-on experience for future careers in everything from the culinary arts and cosmetology to computer programming and automotive technology – for free.

The Monroe Career & Technical Institute (MCTI) in Bartonsville offers a supplemental education program for students residing in the East Stroudsburg‚ Pleasant Valley‚ Pocono Mountain and Stroudsburg school districts. The school features 29 day-school programs‚ representing six industry clusters‚ including service‚ engineering‚ construction‚ communications and transportation. According to Pat Moyer‚ executive director of the school‚ most of the students who attend MCTI for its half-day courses go on to further their education at two-year and four-year schools or through military and apprentice programs. MCTI courses are offered free of charge for students residing in the four sending school districts.

“With the exception of a social studies credit‚ students complete their academic requirements at their sending high schools. Math and science concepts are taught in the vocational programs‚ allowing an excellent opportunity for contextual learning‚” Moyer says.

In addition to the day-school program‚ MCTI also offers more than 90 courses for adults during the evening. More than 2‚000 adult students participate in various career training and recreational programs‚ many of which serve the needs of the local business community with incumbent worker training or customized job training. Moyer says much of the center’s success can be attributed to the involvement of community leaders in the areas of business‚ education‚ labor and industry.

“Local businesses support our programs by serving on advisory committees‚ providing equipment‚ monetary donations and student scholarships. They also provide real work experience for students through the internship and cooperative education programs‚” Moyer says.
