Charleston takes good care of students, offering them a range of educational opportunities starting with primary education and expanding to numerous colleges, including ones geared towards the arts and technology.
The city of Charleston provides numerous schooling options for its students. The Charleston School District offers a high school, middle school, and four separate elementary school to choose from. Also serving the city is the Charleston County School District, the second largest school system in the state and the city's fourth largest employer. The system is comprised of 79 schools, including an array of elementary, middle and high schools as well as charter schools, magnet and schools and specialized programs.
The College of Charleston has continuously enjoyed a position as one of the nation's premiere institutions for quality education in an ideal setting. The city's historic roots spring to life on the Charleston campus, which opened its doors in 1770. Today, the college serves 10,000 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students who thrive in the small-school atmosphere. But there's nothing small about the academic regiment, which offers more than 100 majors and minors in six different schools.
The Art Institute of Charleston is one of more than 45 institutions located throughout the U.S. providing creative and applied arts education. Contrary to popular belief, the 'starving artist' adage doesn't always apply, and the Art Institute goes out of its way to ensure that their students are well taken care of long after they leave school. The Career Services department is dedicated to helping students market themselves and their work towards a specific career path, and pursuing employment opportunities in that field. The Institute's areas of studies include advertising, culinary arts, fashion design, game design and programming and photography.
