Myrtle Beach is the ultimate family getaway in South Carolina. Filled to the brim with exciting outdoor activities, ranging from swimming to helicopter rides, it’s pretty impossible to be bored here.

1. Enjoy the beach

I mean, this one is right in its name, so it’s probably pretty obvious. But still, most people go to Myrtle Beach to park their rears in a car and create some vitamin D. It’s especially fun to look for shells and shark teeth in the sand.

2. Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

The SkyWheel is a large, slow-moving Ferris wheel that offers great views of the area. Being 187 feet tall, it’s one of the tallest running Ferris wheels in the country. Best yet, the pods are air conditioned, and the lights are pretty at night.

3. South Carolina Civil War Museum

This museum is small but mighty. In particular, its collection of firearms, edged weapons, and cannons are surprisingly spectacular, while the entrance fee is nominal. The people who work there clearly know their stuff, and are eager to share it with you. Definitely a must-see for history lovers.

4. Myrtle Beach Boardwalk & Promenade

While not the largest boardwalk on Earth, it still makes for some pleasant strolling. It’s also filled with plenty of cute little shops, arcades, creameries, and the like, meaning it’s a great way to spend a day.

5. Brookgreen Gardens

Open in 1931, these gardens are actually celebrating their 85th birthday this year! It is a nine thousand acre garden/museum preserve, filled with more than 1400 statues of international sculptors. Plus, there are boat rides, and a butterfly house, an exhibit of LEGO brick sculptures, and more.

6. Family Kingdom Amusement Park

With a name like “Family Kingdom,” it has to be good—and it is. It’s a relatively small amusement park (there are about 38 rides currently), but it’s always growing. Four new rides in the last few years include the Twist ‘n Shout, a popular steel roller coaster.

7. Atalaya Castle

Sometimes, you need a quiet getaway from the bustling tourist areas of Myrtle Beach—and Huntington Beach State Park is a great place to do it. In particular, Atalaya Castle—the winter retreat for Archer and Anna Huntington, the son of a robber baron and a famous sculptor, respectively—is a quirky option, as it’s a large Depression-era Spanish-style mansion. It’s definitely interesting in terms of history and architecture!

8. Myrtle Beach Speedway

Are you a NASCAR fan? If you are, you’re likely familiar with this speedway, which runs the Whelen All-American Series race on Saturday nights, as well as the Myrtle Beach 400, IceBreaker 200, NASCAR Racing Experience, and Monster Jam. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon both trained here as well.

9. Helicopter rides

For $20 and up, you can soar in a helicopter over Myrtle Beach. And the seemingly low price doesn’t signify they’re dangerous discount rides—all copters are closely maintained to FAA standards, and the pilots all have many years of military and civilian flight experience.

10. Broadway at the Beach

By far the most popular area of Myrtle Beach, Broadway at the Beach captures a little bit of everything. It’s great for shopping and dining, but is also filled with aquariums, water parks, theme parks, theaters, baseball, golf, racing, wax museums, and much more. You could probably visit Broadway and not go anywhere else for your entire trip, if you so pleased.
