With approximately 950 students enrolled in grades six through eight‚ Brentwood Middle School recently was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.

A national program established under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation‚ the Blue Ribbon School Awards recognize high-performing schools.

“It’s a huge challenge and a huge recognition for our students‚” says Brentwood Middle School Principal Kay Kendrick. “We’re very proud of them.” Kendrick credits the school’s fine faculty and dedicated parents for much of the school’s success.

“We work hard to ensure that our teachers stay on top of new strategies and methods. And we have so many wonderful parents that volunteer their time and talent‚ working to support our efforts both at school and at home.”

Kendrick also points to the support of neighboring Brentwood High School as a contributing factor.

Also known for its academic achievement‚ BHS recently placed 227th among Newsweek magazine’s Top 1‚000 schools list‚ based on the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams. In fact‚ of the 10 Tennessee high schools included on the list‚ four are located in Williamson County.

“We work closely together both academically and athletically‚” Kendrick says. “Each morning we send a group of eighth-grade students over to the high school for world language classes‚ and they have been very gracious in allowing us to use their athletic fields and facilities.”
