When the curtain goes up at Towne Center Theatre‚ audiences often discover the facility is more than just a place for theatrical events. With state-of-the-art lighting‚ sound and technical equipment‚ a proscenium stage and even space to “fly” scenery above the stage‚ the 102-seat auditorium is a perfect place for intimate theater.
But the former church building also houses meeting space‚ a small art gallery and room for seminars and educational programs. “We hope this will be a core for the visual and performing arts‚ not just for Brentwood but for the whole region‚” says Marianne Clark‚ managing director of Towne Center Theatre and artistic director of its primary tenant‚ Towne Center Players.
“We’re trying to provide for the community. Right now people go to Nashville and other places‚ but we wanted something right here that the community could participate in.” The Towne Center Theatre‚ part of the Brentwood Towne Center district‚ was formerly the Mount Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church and before that‚ a schoolhouse built in 1883.
The historic building has been transformed into a 4‚200-square-foot facility that hosts theater‚ concerts and other events‚ and can also be leased for weddings and receptions. The Players‚ who have a 20-year lease on the theater‚ present six shows a year‚ including two musicals.
Programming is family-friendly‚ though not all productions are geared toward children. The Players‚ though not a formal repertory company‚ includes local actors‚ directors and technicians who are joined on occasion by guest celebrities. A youth program enables teens to train with the Players and appear in plays.
