Health care options for Williamson County residents are greater than ever thanks to a recent affiliation between Williamson Medical Center and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The 2011 announcement formalizes and broadens existing relationships between the two nationally recognized systems – relationships that mean more available services for patients.

Williamson Medical Center

Located just off Interstate 65 in Franklin, Williamson Medical Center is a 185-bed community-focused hospital fully accredited by the Joint Commission. The hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care including emergency services, with credentialed physicians in 53 specialties and subspecialties. Each year, WMC's 1,400 full- and part-time employees see more than 10,000 inpatient admissions and 36,000 emergency visits, and perform nearly 7,000 surgeries.

Meanwhile, Nashville-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center operates more than 20 specialty outpatient clinics at 17 locations within Williamson County. Just minutes from home, Vanderbilt Williamson patients receive world-class care in services ranging from dermatology to cardiology.

"Both Williamson Medical Center and Vanderbilt have made large financial investments in Williamson County during the last decade to improve access, quality and excellence," says Dennis Miller, CEO of Williamson Medical Center. "Aligning with one another is the natural next step in continuing to provide high-quality, patient-focused care in Williamson County."

A Healthy Partnership

The agreement ensures both hospitals will remain independent while continuing to meet their patients' needs. And while Vanderbilt's physicians have long referred patients to WMC, the new agreement means more efficient, cost-effective patient care through the creation of new programs and services and the ability to eliminate overlapping and competing projects. Collaborations are planned in cancer care, primary care, diagnostic imagine services, outpatient surgery, outpatient physician practices and medical office building development.

"While this agreement is focused on the joint creation of programs with our colleagues at Williamson Medical Center, we are appreciative of the opportunity to continue to strengthen our relationships with the physicians providing outstanding health care within Williamson County," says Dr. C. Wright Pinson, deputy vice chancellor for health affairs and CEO of Vanderbilt Health System.

Vanderbilt's Promising Future in Williamson County

Vanderbilt will further expand its Williamson County presence through construction of a central Cool Springs campus less than three miles from WMC's Carothers Parkway campus. Purchased in 2010, the $5.1 million, 22-acre site will consolidate already existing specialty outpatient clinics and outpatient surgical services. The initial $60 million, 200,000-square-foot office building could open as early as 2014 and will eventually double in size. In 2012, VUMC also announced plans for an 18,000-square-foot laboratory to be located within the 15-acre Cool Springs Life Sciences Center. The $7.6 million lab will house growth necessary to the Vanderbilt Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery.
