Kingsport has grown into a thriving city with about 54,000 residents and has a vibrant energy replete with opportunities to stay engaged, active and healthy for the young and young at heart.

The Kingsport Senior Center is a wonderful community resource that some call the town’s best kept secret. Dedicated to enriching the lives of the city’s residents over 50, its goal is to encourage seniors to adopt positive behaviors that will lead to healthier lives with a roster of programs dedicated to intellectual pursuits, social activities and wellness.

The center offers recreational opportunities like basketball, billiards, darts, golf, horseshoes, pickleball, swimming, shuffleboard, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, dance classes and more. The facility includes a fully equipped fitness center and a full schedule of classes, including yoga, tai chi, aerobics, strength training, and online classes, and SilverSneakers at both the senior center and at other locations throughout Kingsport.

There are many opportunities to keep seniors socially engaged, including card games, chess and checkers, singing groups, karaoke, knitting and basket weaving. There are arts classes, like watercolor painting, clay classes and wood-shop. There are organized day trips to places like casinos and the theater and longer trips to places like Ireland and France.

The Kingsport YMCA has strong programming for all age groups and works in conjunction with the senior center to provide aquatics programming. The Y facilitates preschool playdates, preschool child care, after-school care, evening and weekend Adventure Kids programming that includes yoga, games, STEM activities, climbing and a play structure.

There are cooking classes for kids, youth sports leagues, summer camps, and a teen Leaders Club that promotes volunteerism. With a focus on wellness, the center runs fitness challenges, diabetes prevention programs, LIVESTRONG, weight loss groups, personal training, group classes and a deluxe fitness center with wellness programs. Its aquatic center also draws high school and college athletes from all over for competition.

The area around Kingsport features a beautiful natural environment that’s great for pursuing active recreation or just enjoying the scenery at a laid-back pace. The city has a burgeoning parks and recreation district, but is also home to Bays Mountain, a 3,500-acre nature park and planetarium. The park features a picturesque lake and almost 40 miles of hiking and biking trails, natural habitats for wolves, bobcats, raptors and reptiles. Bays Mountain has boating and fishing, camping, camps for kids, adventure and ziplining courses, and an astronomy club.
