Lebanon, TN, is home to the Wilson County Fair, one of the state’s most popular summer fairs. In fact, more than 500,000 attendees come to the fair each year, making it one of the top 50 fairs in North America in terms of spectators. Southeast Tourism Society has lauded the fair, and Livability ranked it on its Top 10 Summer Fairs list.
For nine days each August, the annual fair takes over the Wilson County Fairgrounds and hosts everything from spelling bees to a midway full of thrilling rides.
The competitions are the unsung heros on the fair, showcasing local art, food, agriculture and talent. Amateur photography, stained glass and quilting competitions are on display throughout the festival, as are food exhibitions in wine, honey and everything in between. Judged animal shows and science showcases also occur throughout the week.
Looking for something a little more quirky? Don’t miss the Wilson County 6th grader spelling bee, any of the dancing competitions (including clogging), the armwrestling contest or the rooster crowing competition. For even more thrill, demolition derbies happen on Friday and Saturdays at the fair.
Music City, U.S.A.
Located just outside of Music City, it’s no surprise that the festival is also full of country, bluegrass and Americana music performances. Local vocalists, dance groups and school groups perform across genres and styles, meaning there’s something for everyone.
No matter which night you go though, there’s plenty of local artisans to shop, classic carnival rides and food and an antique car show to browse – there’s even a race of monkeys riding dogs.
