Rutherford County is the picture of health these days with more than 300 physicians and 100 dentists practicing here. Highly qualified general practitioners and specialists are available in virtually every area of health care. Here is some background on four of the largest health care facilities in Rutherford County:
Middle Tennessee Medical Center
MTMC in Murfreesboro was established in 1927 and is the largest medical center along the Interstate 24 corridor that bridges Nashville and Chattanooga. However, its long-standing campus is only on 16 acres and there was no opportunity to expand, so MTMC is opening a new $268 million, 286-bed hospital on 68 acres along Medical Center Parkway in the burgeoning Murfreesboro Gateway district. The new hospital starts admitting patients in October 2010.
MTMC continues to offer services such as neonatal intensive care, pediatrics, coronary care, ophthalmology, orthopedics, a cancer center, podiatry, urology and neurosurgery. MTMC also delivers more than 2,500 babies annually.
StoneCrest Medical Center
StoneCrest Medical Center
StoneCrest Medical Center is a 101-bed facility in Smyrna that is part of HCA's TriStar Health System. Patient care, safety and satisfaction are primary focuses resulting in StoneCrest being named “One of the Nation's 100 Top Hospitals” by Thomson Reuters.
Services at StoneCrest include cardiology, orthopedics, neurology, obstetrics, intensive care and diagnostic services. A $15.8 million project in 2009 expanded StoneCrest's surgical services from 75 beds to 101, while in 2008 The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at StoneCrest was one of only 20 facilities nationwide that received a Commission on Cancer New Program Outstanding Achievement Award.
Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Campus
The medical facility in Murfreesboro meets the needs of area veterans and is part of the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, which oversees several community-based outpatient clinics in Tennessee and Kentucky. The medical staff at Alvin C. York VA Campus is primarily affiliated with Meharry Medical College that provides the veterans with oral surgery, psychiatry, general internal medicine, occupational medicine, preventive medicine, geriatric medicine and family practice.
