Zeus and Athena would be proud to see that the Parthenon still stands strong in Nashville today.

The Parthenon in Centennial Park is a full-scale replica of the original building in Athens, with the Nashville centerpiece being a 42-foot replica statue of Athena like the original in Greece that dates back to 438 B.C. The Parthenon in Nashville was originally built in 1897 for Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition, and the decision was made to keep the impressive landmark once the centennial celebration concluded.

Today, the building serves as one of Nashville’s top art museums, and the focus of its permanent collection is a group of 63 paintings by 19th- and 20th-century American artists, donated by James M. Cowan. Artists whose works are on display include masters such as Winslow Homer, John George Brown and Benjamin West, and additional gallery spaces provide a venue for a variety of temporary shows and exhibits.

The Parthenon is open year round on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and is also open Sundays during June, July and August from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Admission is $6 adults, $4 children ages 4-17, $4 seniors 62 and over, and children under 4 are admitted free.
