Whether you’re moving to a new town and trying to get a feel for its vibe, or you’re looking for some new ways to enjoy the town you live in, Instagram is a great way to explore a city without leaving the couch. One way to do this is by using a hashtag search. Just put a # in front of the name of the city you want to explore. The other is through cities’ official Instagram accounts. Here you’ll get to see the best of what the city has to offer, including citywide events, spectacular food choices and the best scenery around.

Here are our picks for the six best official city Instagram accounts:

Ann Arbor, MI

The city of Ann Arbor might be known as a college town (University of Michigan), but one look through its Instagram account and you’ll see reflections of the town’s growing diversity. Just don’t do it hungry, as the city clearly uses its account to forward its image as a food town. But that’s no surprise, as it has some of the best restaurants a foodie could ask for.

Charlottesville, VA

Like the town itself, Charlottesville’s account is filled with character. Even the account description gives you a hint at the town’s fun feel, as it reads, “Taking over Charlottesville’s Instagram because Thomas Jefferson would have wanted us to.” The mostly food-free images, which are replaced by outdoor vistas and cycling or hiking pictures, give a hint to why the town often appears on lists of the most healthy places to live.

Sugar Land, TX

Sugar Land’s a small suburb of Houston with huge quality of life. The town, one of the most affluent and fastest-growing in all of Texas, uses its account to keep residents up to date on upcoming events, to reflect the wide range of activities available to area residents, and every so often to share images of adorable area pets up for adoption.

Little Rock, AR

Little Rock is the center of commerce and government for the state of Arkansas, and its Instagram account reflects that. There you’ll find tons of event reminders, government notices, pictures celebrating the town’s hard working public servants, and even reminders for city budget presentations. But you’ll also find images reflecting a tremendous diversity in its population and in the activities available to its residents.

Issaquah, WA

The Instagram account of Issaquah has a grownup, artsy vibe to it. That’s fitting for this small suburb of Seattle, which reflects the Northwest’s love for all things outdoors (it’s known as Trailhead City), anything hand crafted, and everything that goes with coffee (Hint: Instagram goes great with coffee). There are lots of reasons the town is one of the fastest growing suburbs in the country, but one is reflected in their Instagram account description, which reads, “Trailhead City is a beautiful place, filtered or unfiltered.”

Asheville, NC

Asheville has been on Livability’s radar for a long time, and not just because it’s cementing its place as Beer City, USA. It’s also because we have a thing for towns that are still small enough to feel like home, but big enough to have just about everything you’d want in the way of food, entertainment and activities. Just look through their ‘grams, and you’ll see stunningly beautiful landscapes, the kind of food that makes the pages of the swankiest food magazines, and people enjoying the heights of North Carolina culture. Throughout them all you’ll see the kind of energy that only a vibrant town like Asheville can provide.
