A strong health-care system is a hallmark of the Fort Worth area. And in addition to award-winning medical centers and nationally ranked healthcare providers, Fort Worth is home to a citizenry dedicated to making a difference in the health and wellness of its own community. As a result, several nonprofit organizations focused on health and wellness enjoy long tenures and strong support from local residents.
Seeking a Cure for Cancer
For instance, the American Cancer Society, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in May 2013, has long had a strong presence in Tarrant County. North Texas residents gathered to celebrate the milestone at a special board of directors celebration featuring live entertainment and guests including the mayors of Fort Worth and Arlington. Each year, local residents support the Society's Cowtown Ball, which has raised nearly $6 million during its 20-year run.
Spreading Awareness of Heart Disease
The American Heart Association of Tarrant County works to boost awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans. Each year, the organization hosts fundraisers and educational events such as the Go Red for Women Luncheon, the Tarrant County Heart Ball and the Tarrant County Heart Walk.
Fort Worth's Child Study Center offers diagnosis and treatment services to children who are at risk for developmental disabilities and related behavioral and emotional problems, with a goal of helping these children achieve their full potential. Each year, the Child Study Center hosts fundraisers including the Puzzle Scuttle 5K race and the Aim for a Cause Quail Hunt.
Fighting Juvenile Diabetes
The Greater Fort Worth/Arlington chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) works to improve the lives of people affected by Type 1 diabetes by working for a cure, better treatment and prevention of the disease. Each year, the communities of Fort Worth and Arlington join to raise funding for the cause through JDRF events such as the Walk to Cure Diabetes and the Promise Ball.
