Cheering on pro and college sports rounds out plenty of active recreation options

Sports and recreation in Fort Worth can mean cheering on your favorite pro sports or college team, a challenging round of golf, play time at a local park, cycling the city or hiking area trails. Here's a snapshot of just a few activities the city has to offer.

College Sports

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs compete in 18 varsity sports, the men playing eight and the women 10. Nearby, the Texas-Arlington Mavericks compete in the NCAA Division 1 Sunbelt Conference, and the Texas Wesleyan University Rams compete in the NAIA. Fort Worth also is home to the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl college football game in late December.

Pro Sports

Fort Worth is an easy drive to Arlington for Dallas Cowboys football games and Texas Rangers baseball games, and Fort Worth itself hosts the Crowne Plaza Invitational Golf Tournament at Colonial Country Club each May. Motorsports fans head to Texas Motor Speedway for its two annual NASCAR race weekends as well as an IndyCar series event.


One of the many outdoor jewels in this community is the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014 and today has more than 20 miles of hiking trails. For recreation with a river view, try the Trinity Trails along the Trinity River for walking, biking, cycling or horseback riding. The system covers 40 miles and connects 21 parks, as well as the Fort Worth Botanical Garden and Japanese Garden, Log Cabin Village, Fort Worth Zoo and downtown Fort Worth.


Fort Worth now has a bike rental program in place, Fort Worth Bike Sharing, which has 30 stations and 300 bikes. The bikes have locks, lights, baskets and GPS devices for tracking, and riders can use credit or membership cards to check bikes in and out. Bike station locations include the busy Hospital District, TCU, the Stockyards, the West 7th corridor and nearby Texas Wesleyan University. Fees vary – check


Golfers in Fort Worth have 26 golf courses from which to choose. Private courses include Colonial Country Club, Ridglea Country Club, Mira Vista Country Club and River Crest Country Club. Public courses include Hawks Creek Golf Club, Waterchase Golf Club, and DFW Marriott Hotel & Golf Club at Champions Circle.
