San Angelo is home to a thriving business climate, so much so that Forbes magazine has taken notice. The publication frequently lists this city of 92,000 residents as one of the Best Places for Businesses and Careers, and there are several reasons why.

Goodfellow Air Force Base

The plane truth about Goodfellow Air Force Base is that it's almost a city in itself, with an average weekday population of more than 6,500. The base is the largest employer in San Angelo and has an annual economic impact of more than a quarter of a billion dollars. But even though Goodfellow AFB is a major contributor to San Angelo's tax base, the business climate in this community is so much more.

A key contributor to the city's lofty economic status is the presence of a strong telecommunications industry. Sitel has its largest call center in the world located in San Angelo, employing approximately 1,500 people, and Verizon has approximately 1,000 people at its San Angelo center. Blue Cross Blue Shield has approximately 900 employees and DCS has 750.

The importance of the agricultural industry to the local economy cannot be overstated; the Producer’s Livestock Auction ranks as the nation’s largest for sheep and lambs and is among the top five in the U.S. for cattle auctions. In addition, two large agricultural research centers are located in San Angelo: Texas AgriLife Research and the Angelo State University Management Instruction and Research Center.

Good news arrived in 2009 when Martifer Energy Systems located its North American energy industry operation here. Its $40 million wind turbine tower manufacturing plant positions San Angelo as a hub for wind energy and related companies, although Aermotor Windmill has already been an important part of the local business sector for more than a century.

Health Care

The city also serves as the regional medical center for West Central Texas. Shannon Health System and San Angelo Community Medical Center employ approximately 3,000 staffers combined and provide virtually every health-care service imaginable.

Higher Education

San Angelo is home to Angelo State University, which has a workforce of approximately 1,300 and offers several business-related training programs to individuals and companies. The university has 100 majors as well as 100 student networking organizations.

Downtown San Angelo

The heart of any successful city is its downtown, and downtown San Angelo remains vibrant with more than 250 shops, stores, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and even the beautiful 14-story Cactus Hotel that dates back to 1929. The city also prides itself on downtown preservation and is a Texas Main Street, nationally recognized urban city and a National Trust of Historic Preservation member.
