Downtown Victoria is alive with arts and culture. And the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts helps keep the pulse of this city pumping.
Located at 214 N. Main St., the Welder Center offers a variety of performances and hosts some of Victoria’s biggest events.
Theatre Victoria, which is the center’s resident company, produces three musicals and two plays a year as well as brings in outside artists to perform.
It helps that the Dr. Charles and Mary Katherine Borchers Performance Hall inside the center has a seating capacity of 476, because tickets have been known to sell out.
Residents and visitors alike can buy tickets online and at the box office Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or purchase tickets in advance for the entire season.
For those needing rental space, the center is also the place to go. Their rehearsal hall is outfitted with full-length mirrors for guests to use, while their Charla Borchers Leon Board Room is open for community board meetings at no cost.
The center was founded by the Victoria Performing Arts Center, Inc., whose goal was to bring the arts to downtown Victoria and revitalize the historic district of the community while improving the quality of life for the entire crossroads area.
Today, the center is owned by Victoria College, after ownership was transferred to the school.
The Cultural Council of Victoria also calls the Welder Center home. The council works to provide public information and services, community outreach, and arts in education and youth arts.
