Citizens Medical Center
How do you mend a broken heart? Physicians at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria know the answers.
In 2012, CMC was presented with the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Bronze Quality Achievement Award, in recognition of the hospital's care for STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) heart attack patients. Every year, almost 250,000 people in America experience the STEMI type of heart attack.
STEMI patients require prompt reperfusion therapy, which is a critical procedure in restoring blood flow. Then days later, after a recuperation regimen and before they are eventually discharged, appropriate heart patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers. If applicable, they will receive smoking-cessation counseling as well.
“Citizens Medical Center is dedicated to making our cardiac unit among the best in the country,” says Suzanne Stone, CMC Chest Pain Center coordinator. “Our professionals continue to improve the outcomes of cardiac patients.”
As for the hospital itself, CMC serves Victoria and South Texas with its 344-bed facility that provides services without being costly for patients. There are 220 physicians covering 36 specialties, and Citizens Medical also operates centers specializing in bariatrics, chest pain, women's diagnostics and the Kathryn O'Connor Regional Cancer Center. CMC has fitness and rehabilitation facilities, four family medicine clinics and a helicopter service – Citizens Air Medical – to transport the critically ill or injured to the hospital.
