Abingdon’s Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH), a not-for-profit, 116-bed facility, is one of 13 medical centers within Mountain States Health Alliance, the largest health care system in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

With a 350,000-square-foot replacement facility that opened in 2011, JMH combines modern technology with a long-standing commitment to care that dates back to its founding by physician George Ben Johnston in 1905.

A Full Menu of Services

Among its leading-edge features, JMH is home to a 29-room emergency department, a 128-slice computed-tomography (CT) scanner and a 3 Tesla wide-bore MRI.

JMH offers an array of medical options, including emergency and cardiac care, family birthing, diabetes care, respiratory care, oncology services, and general, vascular and orthopedic surgery.

The hospital’s off-site services include JMH Surgery Center, JMH Home Care, Mountain States Imaging (JMH Women’s Center), Mountain States Rehabilitation (physical, occupational and speech therapy), the Center for Sleep Disorders and Mountain States Hospice.

Life-Saving Intervention

As a reflection of its commitment to heart health, JMH recently implemented an interventional cardiology program, allowing experienced doctors to diagnose and treat patients around the clock for urgent heart problems.

The hospital’s leadership added the program in light of the need for rapid attention when signs of a potential heart attack arise.

“When you are experiencing chest pain, every second counts, and it is imperative to be treated quickly,” says Sean McMurray, the hospital’s CEO. “Our highly trained team at Johnston Memorial is available 24 hours a day to diagnose and treat your heart-care needs. We are thrilled to offer such a lifesaving service to our community.”

Clean and Green

JMH also takes pride in its dedication to sustainability. The ecofriendly facility was Southwest Virginia’s first LEED Gold-certified hospital, and it ranks 28th on a recent list of the world’s Top 30 Most Environmentally Friendly Hospitals.

Among the features that earned the distinction: green building materials, water-saving fixtures, motion-sensing lights, and energy-efficient chillers, boilers and insulation units.

“We are committed to being good stewards of our community, and that includes taking care of our beautiful surroundings,” McMurray says. “When building our new facility, we put a lot of thought into not only how to positively impact patient care but also on how we can reduce waste and conserve energy.”
