It’s easy to feel right at home in Alexandria, and many residents choose the city for its beauty, charm and quality of life. Several others live in Alexandria because it’s ideal for people who commute to Washington, D.C. to work. Here is some background on five popular neighborhoods in Alexandria:

Del Ray

Del Ray is a residential area that primarily features small homes and townhomes. This charming neighborhood has a large concentration of young singles and families, and its ethnic diversity inspires an annual Art on the Avenue Festival that brings 50,000 people together for food, entertainment, fun and shopping.

North Ridge

Just south of Alexandria is North Ridge, a historic residential area with various styles of houses, such as two-story homes or ranch models with basements. This neighborhood features a number of highly regarded private and public schools, like T.C. Williams High that has garnered multiple awards for its academic programs.

Old Town

Nightlife and history prevail in Old Town, a historic downtown district mainly known for its shopping, restaurants and art galleries. Robert E. Lee once called this place home, and nowadays everyone from college students to young professionals to retirees live in mainly one- to two-bedroom apartment complexes/townhomes and some three- to four-bedroom homes.

Rosemont

Rosemont is one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city thanks in large part to its scenic tree-filled streets, and occupants enjoy easy access to the King Street and Broaddock Metro Stations as well as area schools. College students, families and young singles reside here in bungalows, Tudor cape cods, Colonials, farmhouses, and arts-and- crafts homes that range from three to four bedrooms.

West End

West End is a suburban area of Alexandria, and those living in this district range from young singles to senior citizens. There are four neighborhoods in West End: Seminary Hill, a mostly residential, single-family area; Lower Alexandria; Seminary West; and the Landmark area, home to Landmark Mall. Housing options include small homes, rowhouses, townhomes, senior citizen communities, high-rise apartments and condominiums.
