Being a busy body in Alexandria is easy to do thanks to the many recreational activities and venues that are available to residents and visitors. Here is a sampling:
Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities
With their slogan “Fits Your Life,” the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities oversees a variety of programs that help keep the community healthy and moving. Alexandria has 23 parks, with 18 of them accommodating dogs (five fenced and 13 unfenced), and there are 20 trails throughout the city for walking, biking and inline skating. Other outdoor facilities include 62 boat slips at the city marina, 36 playground areas, 36 tennis courts, and indoor and outdoor pools.
The department has seven recreational centers with weight centers, fitness rooms, dance studios, racquetball areas and more, and sports leagues are available for all active residents. The adult league has seasonal sports throughout the year such as co-ed volleyball, co-ed soccer, women’s flag football and men’s basketball, and youth can participate in organized seasonal sports like boxing in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter, cheerleading and the Alexandria Soccer Association League in the spring, baseball and softball in the summer, and other sports year round. The department also offers specialized teen activities such as monthly themed parties, while senior citizens can take part in water aerobics, bridge clubs and computer classes.
