It seems like such an unlikely place for such technologically advanced learning.

Under the backdrop of mountain peaks and lush greenery, an institute of higher education is turning out some of the most tech-savvy and science-minded individuals in the country.

Founded in 1872, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a comprehensive, innovative research university with the largest full-time student population in the state. Virginia Tech’s 29,000-plus students can choose from five dozen bachelor’s degree programs and 140 master’s and doctoral degree programs. Even more, an adjacent research center and a computing and communications complex offer worldwide information access.

Over at the campus’ accredited Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, students are learning technical techniques of a different kind. Here, Virginia Tech’s specialized faculty teaches the most current scientific knowledge to promote bone, joint and muscle health and to diagnose and treat patients. The curriculum is based on the belief that given the optimum conditions the body has an amazing ability to heal, and that the body, mind and spirit all work together to fulfill this goal.

For prospective students who’d rather operate on animals than people, Virginia Tech is also home to one of the nation’s 28 veterinary medical schools.

Despite all its science and technology strong suits, Virginia Tech has a creative side, too. Its school of the arts offers a variety of majors for all artistic outlets, from art history to music, creative writing to theater. Thanks to a recent arts initiative, the campus now boasts a new state-of-the-art performance hall, a visual arts gallery and a creative technologies lab.

For a less costly higher education, Blacksburg residents also have the option to attend New River Community College in nearby Dublin, where classes range from early childhood education to welding.

For younger learners, five elementary schools of the Montgomery County school district as well as six private schools are located within Blacksburg city limits.
