Nationally recognized for a variety of programs including orthopedic, cardiac and patient care, Centra Health has two top-ranked hospitals in Lynchburg: Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital. A 270-bed emergency and critical care center, LGH specializes in cardiology, emergency medicine, orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery. At the facility’s 180,000-square-foot Stroobants Heart Center, the dedicated cardiac team opens blocked arteries 43 minutes faster than the national average, making them one of the quickest in the country. In fact, the emergency department at LGH has a dedicated chest pain center to diagnose chest discomfort. Diagnostic services for patients include an exercise stress test that allows patients to exercise in a controlled environment under supervision to determine the problem. If any continued care is needed, the 12-bed acute coronary care unit provides intensive, highly specialized care to patients suffering from cardiac problems that require constant monitoring. From the pacemaker clinic to the cardiac catheterization laboratories, the hospital is fully prepared to take care of any heart emergency or long-term surgical treatments. But heart health is only one specialty of LGH; in 2008, national hospital ranking company HealthGrades gave the facility awards of excellence for gastrointestinal care and surgery, general surgery, joint replacement and orthopedic care. Established in 1924, Virginia Baptist Hospital has also received some impressive accolades, including Press Ganey’s Summit Award for patient satisfaction, thanks to its premiere inpatient facilities. The hospital revamped its customer service and patient relations in 1999, and since then it has maintained a strong patient-focused environment, putting it in the nation’s top 5 percent. The facilities include a renowned women’s and children’s care; new mothers know they are in good hands at a place where 2,400 babies are born every year. Family classes are offered to get ready for the birth, and though no one anticipates any problems, VBH is fully prepared if anything happens as the regional center for high-risk pregnancies and births. No matter the diagnosis, Lynchburg residents can expect to get the care and treatment they need, right at home, thanks to its Centra Health facilities.
