Amazingly, the market’s been around since 1783 and, as it did then, still remains one of the most vital parts of the community. Open for lunch, the small garden and market also has a café where you can relax inside or on the breezy deck overlooking Blackwater Creek. The farm-fresh bistro serves up irresistible classics such as pimento cheese on rye, BLTs and egg salad, though it’s known for standouts like sweet lemon bread with cream cheese. Tiny diners can sink their teeth into a peanut buttery fluffernutter sandwich. That level of quality holds true at Meriwether’s Market Restaurant, a casual gourmet dining place with an acclaimed wine list and live jazz. The menu offers Southern comforts along the lines of garlicky shrimp and grits or beer-battered catfish as well as indulgent buttery, basil escargots or shrimp- and crab-topped tenderloin – and the pizzas are pretty tasty, too.
