Richmond's outdoor recreation revolves around parks and golf courses.

Outdoor activities in Richmond are easy to come by as there are several parks dotted throughout the city, as well as a variety of golf courses.

Golf Courses

Open since 2002, Providence Golf Club is an 18-hole course that covers 6,529 yards. The tee boxes, fairways and rough feature Bermuda grass while the greens are made of bentgrass. This public course also includes a driving range, short game area and practice bunkers.

Also comprising 18 holes, Glenwood Golf Club is the oldest public course in the Richmond area and is located near the city's downtown. The course is known for its small greens and large fairways.

Richmond also includes a selection of private courses. The Country Club of Virginia offers three 18-hole courses, including the James River Course, Tuckahoe Creek Course and Westhampton Course, as well as two clubhouses. Meadowbrook Country Club, located on the original W.H. Jeffress Estate, is home to an 18-hole course, two tennis courts, horse riding trails and a clubhouse. With a course that runs along the James River, Willow Oaks Country Club features a clubhouse, fitness center, swimming pool and other amenities.

Parks

Richmond's most visited park, the James River Park System sees more than 500,000 visitors annually and comprises more than 550 acres. The park includes several trails for running, walking and biking, as well as opportunities for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, rafting and swimming. Another popular park is Byrd Park, which covers nearly 300 acres in the West End area and features a tennis complex, softball fields, a playground, the Barker Field Dog Park and more.

Monroe Park, Richmond's oldest park, is located adjacent to the Monroe Park Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University and is frequented by the school's students. Previously used by Confederate troops, the park offers free wireless internet and includes historic statues, the Checkers House and more.

Libby Hill Park, one of the three original parks in Richmond, is known for the beautiful view of the city it offers. Chimborazo Park & Playground also provides a nice view of Richmond, and is home to the National Battlefield park headquarters and a miniature Statute of Liberty.

The 40-acre Gillies Creek Park includes Richmond's only BMX track, and also features an 18-hole disc golf course. Additional parks in the city include Bryan Park, Forest Hill Park and Battery Park.
