Burlington rolls out a 10-day jazz feast every June.

The Discover Jazz Festival has been going strong for over 25 years, with such performers as Ornette Coleman, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Joshua Redman and Marcia Ball.

More than a dozen restaurants, clubs and bars across town have jazz and related acts on the bill, and two stages on downtown’s Church Street Marketplace provide free music. Community members can work with artists each day at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts to create original multimedia performances.

The festival itself has expanded to include blues, world and gospel music tents, all along the shores of Lake Champlain.

Arts and expression are central to Burlington’s thriving cultural scene.

Pine Street Artworks takes up residence in the city’s historic, post-industrial South End. The 2,500-square-foot gallery is housed in a former factory. The neighborhood itself hosts the Burlington’s largest concentration of working artists, plus cafés and one-of-a-kind shops.

Contemporary art takes center stage at the Firehouse Gallery, part of the Firestone Center for the Visual Arts. The center has print and clay studios, offers classes and brings its events into the community.

Arts education also is a key part of the Flynn Center’s mission and includes year-round classes in dance, theater and music for kids, teens and adults. The center and its several stages host regional theater, classical music and dance groups, teachers for workshops and graduate courses, and 45,000 schoolchildren each year for special performances.

Fine crafts are represented at Frog Hollow: The Vermont State Craft Center, a non-profit that has classes, galleries and shops.

History gets attention at the Robert Hull Fleming Museum on the UVM campus, which focuses on art and anthropology. Additionally, the 1797 home of Ethan Allen, Vermont’s founder, offers guided tours on weekends.
