OshKosh B’Gosh, Other Big Companies Spur City’s Economic Growth

Oshkosh is lucky. It has a diverse economy that is strong in sectors like education, healthcare, IT, manufacturing and tourism.

Perhaps the most famous company in this central-eastern Wisconsin community is OshKosh B’Gosh, a premier maker of clothing for children up to 10 years old. The company employs about 3,500 worldwide, including some 300 in its local corporate headquarters building.

Here are some other companies enjoying economic success in Oshkosh:

Oshkosh Truck Corporation

Founded in 1917, Oshkosh Truck Corp. remains a fixture of the Oshkosh business community. The manufacturer of defense and commercial trucks and truck bodies employs about 6,000 worldwide (2,700 in Oshkosh), with dealers and distributors in about 40 countries.


Bemis High Barrier Flexible Packaging Group employs about 1,500 people in the area, with seven separate Oshkosh companies under the Bemis umbrella. The company produces plastic packaging for foods like bacon and cheese, snacks, candies, bulk foods and pet foods.

University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

Established in 1871, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has an enrollment of about 13,500 students and is part of the University of Wisconsin System. UW Oshkosh offers nearly 200 majors along with 15 graduate programs and two doctoral programs.

Aurora Medical Center

Aurora Medical Center is a 320,000-square-foot, full-service hospital that provides the Oshkosh community with access to a 24-hour emergency room as well as the latest diagnosis and treatment services, including MRI and CT, a linear accelerator for radiation oncology, and a dialysis unit. Aurora Medical also features a Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic, which provides patients with spiritual and emotional support along with access to the latest research, techniques and trails.

Silver Star Brands

One of the largest direct marketers of consumer gifts and household products in America, Silver Star Brands ships nearly four million orders annually through its various catalog sales and online sites. The company’s six brands are As We Change, Easy Comforts, Exposures, Miles Kimball, Native Remedies and Walter Drake.

Winnebago Mental Health Institute

Formerly Winnebago State Hospital, Winnebago Mental Health Institute is a psychiatric hospital in the unincorporated community of Winnebago near Oshkosh. The hospital treats about 170 patients every day.

U.S. Bank

The fifth-largest bank in the country, U.S. Bank has about 500 employees in the Oshkosh area. The bank’s history dates back to 1863, and today its assets exceed $460 billion.
