Want to keep the word “bored” out of your kid’s vocabulary? Community attractions such as Little Oshkosh, Glacier Ridge Animal Farm and Fugleberg Park are great outlets for children to run off steam as well as learn a few things at the same time.

Little Oshkosh

Constructed in Menomonee Park by 6,000 volunteers over the course of a week, Little Oshkosh is one of the nation’s largest community-built playgrounds and incorporates suggestions gathered from children at 23 local elementary schools. Features include a model of a human skull big enough to climb in, a rocket ship, a castle and an airplane. Handicapped accessible, the playground is open 7 a.m. to dusk from spring to late fall.

Entertain the Kids

Spend a few hours where the buffalo roam at Glacier Ridge Animal Farm, which houses farm animals like pigs, goats, ducks, geese and chickens along with exotic beasts like camels, elk, deer and water buffalo. A store called The Trading Post is a great way to end your visit, and it even has bison and elk meat for sale.

Fun at Fugleberg

One of the most popular sites for families to enjoy the outdoors is Fugleberg Park, which features a baseball diamond, soccer field, basketball court, walking trail and two boat launch ramps. Fishing is available, and toddlers can have fun at an onsite playground.

A Novel Idea

A community fixture since 1900, Oshkosh Public Library on Washington ranks first or second every year in library use per capita among libraries of its size in Wisconsin – partly because of its ability to keep pace with technology as well as continue expanding its program schedule. The building has undergone several upgrades over the years, and through it all, Sawyer and Harris, 9-foot bronze lions, have stood guard at the library’s main entrance since 1912.

Try TJ’s

For a family friendly restaurant setting, try TJ’s Harbor Restaurant that offers panoramic views of Lake Winnebago from its second-floor dining loft. The food is always served hot, fast and delicious, and several menu items cater to children. A good menu choice for adults? Try the blackened salmon served over smoked Gouda risotto – always served ultra-fresh.

Multiple Choices

For education needs, students (and parents) have access to a number of excellent academic choices throughout the community, including a highly ranked Oshkosh Area School District along with four private schools. For college students, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh has an enrollment of 14,000, and another higher education choice is Fox Valley Technical College.

For the Whole Family

Places in Oshkosh where the entire family will have a good time include Menominee Zoo, Leach Amphitheater (outdoor shows and concerts), Pollack Community Water Park, Paine Art Center and Gardens and the Oshkosh Public Museum.

Get In Your Steps

A number of beautiful trails in Oshkosh and Winnebago County are perfect for walking, biking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Top-rated spots include Mascoutin Valley State Trail, Oshkosh Riverwalk, Terrell’s Island Trail, Tribal Heritage Trail and Wiouwash State Trail, and Oshkosh also has 29 community parks.
