Oshkosh’s Culture is Ideal for Newcomer Families

Visit attractions like Fugleberg Park, the Oshkosh Public Library and Glacier Ridge Animal Farm

Want to keep the word “bored” out of your kid’s vocabulary? Oshkosh moms and dads looking for good outlets  where kids will be entertained will find plenty of activity-packed local parks, family-friendly waterfront restaurants and other great community attractions.

Spend a Day at a Park

Oshkosh also has 29 community parks, such as Pollock Community Water Park, which has amenities that include water slides, a lazy river, a splash pad and sand play area. Another favorite is Menominee Park, which has a designated children’s amusement area with a train and whip ride. This 100-acre park on the western shores of Lake Winnebago features trails, a zoo, athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts — plus access to rental aqua bikes, paddle boats, paddle boards, kayaks and canoes for fun on the water.

A Novel Idea

A community fixture since 1900, Oshkosh Public Library on Washington ranks first or second every year in library use per capita among libraries of its size in Wisconsin – partly because of its ability to keep pace with technology as well as continue expanding its program schedule. The building has undergone several upgrades over the years, and through it all, Sawyer and Harris, 9-foot bronze lions, have stood guard at the library’s main entrance since 1912.

Meals With a View

There’s something especially fun about waterfront dining, and Oshkosh has several solid options for that. For family-friendly dining experiences along the Fox River, try Fox River Brewing Company, Becket’s, Ground Round at River’s Edge, or Dockside Tavern, Food & Spirits. Another option for waterfront dining is TJ’s Harbor Restaurant, which offers gorgeous panoramic views of Lake Winnebago from its second-floor dining loft.

Multiple Choices

For education needs, students (and parents) have access to a number of excellent academic choices throughout the community, including a highly ranked Oshkosh Area School District along with four private schools. For college students, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh has an enrollment of more than 14,000, and another higher education choice is Fox Valley Technical College.

For the Whole Family

Places in Oshkosh where the entire family will have a good time include Menominee Zoo, Leach Amphitheater (outdoor shows and concerts), Paine Art Center and Gardens and the Oshkosh Public Museum.

Get In Your Steps

Many beautiful trails in Oshkosh and Winnebago County are perfect for walking, biking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. Top-rated spots include Mascoutin Valley State Trail, Oshkosh Riverwalk, Terrell’s Island Trail, Tribal Heritage Trail and Wiouwash State Trail.
