All Eyes on Alcon: Meet the Huntington-Based Brand
Alcon has been helping people see brilliantly for over 70 years.
As the world’s population grows older, so does the demand for eye care. That’s where Alcon and its more than 700 Huntington-area employees are stepping in to help.
The 73-year-old company makes products and devices that help treat eye conditions and diseases, such as vision loss, dry eyes, allergies, cataracts, astigmatism and retinal issues.
Alcon, a global company with headquarters in Geneva, operates two facilities in the Huntington area. The company’s first Huntington plant opened in 1978; Alcon expanded its local operations with a new 70,000-square-foot facility 8 miles north of the original location in 2010.
Here, employees make many products you may recognize from your most recent visit to the eye doctor or pharmacy.
Alcon manufactures several types of contact lenses, including daily disposable, reusable and color-enhancing lenses. The company also makes contact lens cleaning solutions and many over-the-counter products like lubricating and antihistamine eye drops.
Alcon also makes an array of different technologies used daily by surgeons. At its Huntington facilities, for instance, the company makes intraocular lenses, which surgeons implant during cataract surgery after removing the patient’s cloudy natural lens. Alcon continues to advance its IOL portfolio, and Huntington is at the forefront of the company’s strategic manufacturing.
“We’re committed to serving our customers and their patients and look for ways to serve their needs for advanced cataract surgery options,” says Erin Adkins, who leads human resources at the Huntington facilities.
Alcon’s presence in the Huntington area can be felt in other ways, too, such as through its annual employee volunteer day, Alcon in Action. Alcon also supports area nonprofits and schools, including the Huntington Area Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity and Lily’s Place, a neonatal abstinence syndrome center.
As eye care technologies improve and change, one thing is certain: Alcon remains a steady, constant presence in Huntington, helping people around the world see more clearly.
