When Cheyenne area businesses want their employees to receive specialized training‚ they turn to Laramie County Community College.
In addition to offering technical and vocational education and preparing traditional students seeking college degrees‚ LCCC partners with local businesses to provide continuing education and workforce development for adults.
“LCCC is dedicated to becoming the community’s training department through the provision of high-quality and low-cost training programs that are tailored to the needs of the community’s businesses‚” says Dr. Charles Bohlen‚ LCCC president.
Business Training and Workforce Development
The Business Training and Workforce Development program offers many learning opportunities‚ ranging from customer-service training to instruction in computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
In 2003‚ the program introduced professional development training on a customized basis with revolving‚ open enrollment. Available for many courses‚ open enrollment enables employers to send one or two employees to training at a time‚ reducing the number of people out of the office.
“This program benefits the community by assisting in the development of a skilled and qualified workforce that helps to ensure productivity and profitability of local businesses and industries‚” Loree Hart‚ program coordinator‚ says. “Also‚ by having high-quality training available locally‚ employers often do not have to send their employees out of state to get the training they need. This saves them time away from the office‚ travel expense and the liability of having employees on the highways.”
The Business Training and Workforce Development office also offers college-credit training programs in customer service‚ warehousing and distribution‚ and manufacturing. Licensed by the Wyoming Business Council and the Community College Commission‚ the eight- to 16-week training sessions are used for high-demand occupation training – typically using grant money from the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services.
According to Hart‚ the community college decided to apply credit to these programs‚ in part‚ to entice participants to continue their education toward an associate’s degree.
Cost varies by class. One-day computer software courses are $71. College credit pre-employment training programs are $995. Professional development classes range from $89 to $139.
“LCCC’s workforce training development program has really taken off‚” Hart says‚ noting that it has helped about 50 businesses and several hundred employees with job-skills training during the last two years.
Future training classes are being considered in such areas as emergency management‚ work ethics‚ credit unions‚ mentoring‚ medical transcription and coding‚ and manufacturing. LCCC also is working to partner with area high schools to provide customer-service training.
“Laramie County Community College is vital to the economic viability of Southeastern Wyoming‚” Bohlen says. “Prosperous businesses must have employees who have the necessary people and technical skills that allow their companies to be highly competitive.”
