For golfers, it would be difficult to find a spot sweeter than Rock Springs and Sweetwater County, Wyoming, when it comes to combining breathtaking vistas with quality golf.

There are only two regulation golf courses in Sweetwater County, providing a total of 36 holes of golf. But what holes they are. With the Tepee, Leucite and Aspen Mountains providing a picturesque backdrop, playing golf in Sweetwater County is a visual treat.

White Mountain Golf Course

The area’s primary golfing facility is the 27-hole White Mountain Golf Course, located in Rock Springs. White Mountain is divided into three separate nine-hole courses: the Desert Course, the Sands Course and the Lakes Course. The Desert and Sands courses both opened in 1979, while the Lakes course was added in 2009.

The Desert Course has been rated as one of the "top five courses in Wyoming" by Golf Digest magazine, but all three of White Mountain’s nine-hole layouts provide a challenging test. From the back tees, the Desert and Sands courses combine to play longer than 7,000 yards, and if either is paired with the slightly shorter Lakes course it is still approximately 6,900 yards.

Combine that length with narrow fairways, trees and lakes that come into play throughout the course and the tendency for high winds to occasionally sweep off the surrounding mountains, and you have all the ingredients for a formidable day on the links. But the layout rewards good shot-making, and even on a difficult day the beauty of the surrounding scenery makes for an enjoyable round. Plus it is hard to beat the price. Nine holes usually costs less than $20, and a full 18 holes can be had for $28 to $32.

Rolling Green Country Club

The area’s other golfing option can be found 20 miles away at Rolling Green Country Club, an 18-hole private course in Green River. Rolling Green is picturesque, enhanced by the presence of the Green River, which cuts through the course and comes into play on several holes. Like White Mountain, the fairways at Rolling Green are narrow, and wind can be a factor. Although the club is private, visitors who live 100 or more miles from Green River can golf at a rate of $27.50 for 9 holes of golf with a cart or $55 for 18 holes of golf with a cart.

Both courses are scheduled to be open April through October, but that can change because of the often unpredictable Wyoming weather.
